The Isle of Mull is a favourite place for bird watchers and has a large list of regularly seen species including many breeding raptors as well as rare and endangered birds.

Some magnificent birds choose to over winter around the shores of Mull. Iona’s bird life is both prolific and ever changing with the seasons. Together with the sea-birds who both nest and visit the island, there are many land birds who call Iona home for at least part of the year. For instance, in early summer you will no doubt hear the rasp of a corncrake in a hayfield.

It spent about 3 hours on our lawn pecking and feeding on birds of Iona and Mull book from the grass.I have attached a photo of the many I have ’ll be interesting to see if it comes back at some stage or whether that was my ‘once in a lifetime’ view.

Although Mull is becoming famous as the 'Eagle Island', because of the good chance of seeing both golden and white-tailed eagles, it is the wide range of birdlife seen amongst such remarkable scenery that really makes Mull, along with the Treshnish Islands, Staffa and Iona so special for the birder.

Bird watching is a popular hobby especially on an island that has so many birds of prey. Finding and identifying different bird species can be quite a challenge so we recommend you take a wildlife tour early on in your holiday so you can make the best of the time you have available.
